Job Description
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Accountant to join The London Borough of Haringey on a contract basis.  

We have a Principal Accountant role in the Chief Accountant’s Team at the London Borough of Haringey which we are recruiting to.  This post is key to supporting the Chief Accountant and Deputy Chief Accountant in maintaining the integrity of the Council’s accounts, and producing the Statement of Accounts each year.  

This role is to lead on all fixed assets related accounting including acquisitions, revaluations, capital charges, grant recognition and disposals. This will also include complex areas such as Lease Accounting, calculating Minimum Revenue Provision and Capital Settlement & Financing. The post-holder would keep abreast with technical developments arising from changes in legislation, professional guidance and advice from experts and auditors. He/she would

play a lead role in the commissioning and validation of the annual fixed assets valuation exercise
ensure that the fixed assets register is updated and reconciled with property databases.
maintain capital related coding and the capital reporting structure is up-to-date
to action all capital virements in respect of capital charges
To work closely the capital monitoring teams and services to facilitate correct capital accounting
complete capital related statutory returns such as the Housing Pooling Return, Capital Payments Return, Capital Outturn Return and WGA
produce notes to the Statement of Accounts and capital outturn
The Principal Accountant works closely with the Chief Accountant and Deputy Chief Accountant to ensure that the Council’s financial reporting processes, procedures and policies are pragmatic, fit for purpose, up to date with best practice, and deliver maximum value to the Council. This role has a high degree of responsibility and autonomy for how they approach the workload in their areas: including the design and preparation of working papers, and managing audit queries. 

The above role is expected to last for at least 6 months (and possibly up to 12 months depending on how quickly we can recruit to a permanent role) as we’d need to cover the 21/22 year-end Closure and audit of accounts (which is not expected to be completed before January 2023).

About You

You will be a technical expert who enjoys, and has a flair for, financial accounting.  You will be a natural problem solver, with excellent excel skills, and a desire to constantly strive for improvements in all areas of work.  This role involves line managing and supervising other members of the Chief Accountant’s Team, so we are also looking for an individual who enjoys team building and helping more junior staff achieve their goals and develop their skills.  Prospective applicants should be qualified or actively studying towards CCAB qualification.
