Job Description
The Managing Consultant role, along with that of Principal Consultant, is at the very heart of our management consulting capability. Management Consultants work constructively with our clients in the practical delivery of consulting projects. Typically, these will be initiatives to support growth, improve profitability or help clients set up to deliver their strategic objectives. Such projects may be delivered on a standalone basis by the management consulting team, but often in collaboration with colleagues from across the wider RSM enterprise, including amongst others our Technology Consulting, Digital Transformation, ESG and Risk Assurance colleagues.
The primary objectives of the role are to; deliver consulting activities in line with agreed project plans, lead the design and delivery of engagements, manage the delivery team in the delivery of engagements.
Additionally, a Management Consultant will be looking for opportunities to on-sell work.
Main duties
* Design and planning of consulting engagements
* Managing stakeholder relationships within the project
* Reporting to stakeholders on the status and progress of the activities within their scope (including effectively identifying risks, issues, and potential mitigations)
* Management of risks and issues, escalating where necessary
* ‘On the ground’ management of delivery teams
* Managing project budgets and keeping within agreed scope
* Ensuring the satisfactory completion of agreed deliverables
Person specification
A good grounding in organisational improvement approaches and methodologies and a good, practical understanding of Lean philosophy. A practical understanding of project management approaches. Commercially astute and good at understanding the drivers of profitability in sectors and businesses. Numerate and literate, with the ability to analyse and model data and produce highly professional reports.
Will have, or will be developing, specialist capabilities in either a sector or technical aspect of management consultancy of top of a strong core management consulting skillset
* Has competence in and experience of planning and running improvement engagements, including
* Project planning and plan management
* Budget and resource management
* Status and progress reporting
* Management of risks, issues, actions and decision
* Identification and escalation of changes in scope or deliverables
* Is competent at scoping and diagnosis of a process, function or team
Can rapidly identify potential issues, improvement opportunities and areas for further investigation
Will possess the ability to:
* understand the commercial (and other) drivers of an organisation and the consequent operational implications to:
* design optimal improvements
* identify opportunities for further consulting (and other RSM) activity with client
* present clearly and professionally:
* In meetings, workshops, and other physical contexts
* In written communications
* Effectively facilitate group working sessions
* analyse effectively, including to:
* interpret and draw conclusions from financial and operational data
* quantify and calculate demand and resource; estimate and prioritise benefits
* produce simple business models.
* Adept at solving problems, both for client’s and in the delivery of engagements
* Competent in the use of business software applications (e.g., spreadsheets, communication and collaboration software, presentation software)
* Engages well at all levels of a clients’ organisation, with confidence, credibility, and humility
* Listens actively to the ‘very last drop’
Education and qualifications
A minimum NVQ4 level qualification and probably a degree (or even post-graduate qualification), ideally in a commercial discipline.
Experience
A minimum of 5 years’ experience in management consultancy, or in an operational management role (team leader or above) with a significant element of organisational change in their career history (e.g., as an in-house lean / continuous improvement change agent). Ideally with a breadth of experience across organisations and sectors, but with experience of one or more.
