Hybrid working: 2 days office, 3 days remote

Hours: Mon – Thurs 9am – 5.30pm, Fri 9am – 4.15pm

Our client, a global leader in the creative promotional merchandise sector and one of the largest promotional product suppliers in the world is now seeking an experienced and commercially astute Indirect Tax Manager to take responsibility for all aspects of Indirect Tax advisory and compliance across the company’s European entities. The role will report to the European Financial Controller, also working closely with the Group Head of Tax, to ensure all taxes in all jurisdictions are managed in line with Group policy. You will have excellent communication skills with all levels of staff, be confident in delivering training and providing tax advice and support to various departments to ensure taxes are appropriately considered; in particular around the movement of goods both within and outside of Europe.

Responsibilities:

Compliance – Responsibility for managing indirect tax compliance for all European entities. This includes the timely and accurate submission of VAT returns, annual returns, EC sales lists, Intrastat, and all other submissions required to be made to HM Revenue and Customs, or equivalent European tax authorities, either directly or through use of third party advisors. Ensuring regular and appropriate reporting to the EFC & FD of any material concerns that need to be escalated. Supporting the company in being ahead of the game in terms of new Indirect Tax compliance requirements that affect their business
Reporting – Responsibility for all VAT related balance sheet reconciliations, including accuracy, recoverability and timely resolution of reconciling items. To include the reporting and forecasting of VAT return cash inflows & outflows. Provide support in the year end financial audit for all Indirect Tax queries and deliverables.
Advisory – Provide indirect tax advice and recommendations to support the business in its decision making on global projects and overall strategy, taking a commercial and pragmatic approach whilst effectively managing & minimising risk. Key role in ensuring the importance of compliance is understood by the business, and that the teams have the right guidance in order to advise their global clients on the best commercial options available on their orders.
Training – Responsibility for providing regular, relevant training to the business at all levels, using all methods available such as their learning platform, in person sessions, process notes & diagram flows. It is critical that the information and guidance provided is understood by the recipient. They recognise that tax can be a complicated subject for many, they need the successful candidate to be able to translate training and information in a non-technical, operational manner that can be understood by the recipients.
Process & Systems – Management & Improvement – Continuously review systems and processes to maximise tax reporting capabilities and ensuring compliance. Review the operational tax processes to create efficiencies and enhance reliability over accuracy of VAT reporting. This will involve working closely with IT and other departments across the business, implementing automation.
Team Management – Provide support to your direct reports, ensuring they have the right tools & training to do their job and progress – They believe succession planning is key to team stability.
What you’ll need:

Ideal candidates will have a recognised financial professional qualification (e.g. CTA, AIIT, CA, ACA) with a minimum of 2 years post qualification experience.
If trained by HM Revenue and Customs, you will have developed commercial experience in a top 10 accountancy firm and/ or in industry.
Significant experience in VAT accounting and financial reconciliations
Strong UK/EU VAT technical knowledge and the ability to lead in problem solving commercially focused situations.
Some experience in managing tax audits/ appeals and experience of having worked closely and effectively with HM Revenue and Customs and/ or other Tax Authorities.
You will need to be confident and assertive, able to build rapport and effectively communicate with people at all levels, including explaining highly technical matters to non-finance employees in an appropriate and considerate manner.
The position requires someone who is highly computer literate, with excellent Excel skills. Effective organizational ability and time management skills are crucial, and you must be able to work to tight deadlines.
Teamwork is essential in this role therefore you must be team orientated and able to maintain positive, supportive relationships with your colleagues at all times. Previous experience in a fast-moving finance environment is essential.
